Don’t put your happiness in someone else’s hands. You’re the only one who can control your happiness. You may think that you can’t live without X or Y, that they are the only thing that brings joy to your life, but that’s just not true. Before them, it, or whatever, you were happy. Maybe not all the time, but there were elements of your life that brought you happiness. We put too much focus on outside elements making us happy and the truth is that they can’t.

Happiness is from within, it’s not something that is found by getting a new job, home, car or pair of trainers/shoes. You may think that these things will make you happy, but the truth is that they won’t. It’s your feelings about these things that make you happy. You may be lucky and the new job does bring you joy, your new colleagues may be all super fun and laughs and your boss is a dream to work for and has your back, but how long will this last? Nothing is permanent. Your new car will soon be old, a new model will come out and you’ll aspire to have that one instead. Your new job may be in jeopardy because there’s been a takeover and they’re closing your office.

Life isn’t permanent, we are only here for a short while and we need to make the most of that time and serve our life’s purpose, which for everyone is exactly the same. Your life’s purpose is to be happy and to spread Joy, there’s literally nothing else that we are on this planet to do..

Now the way that you do this is entirely up to you.

What makes you joyful?

What makes your soul sing?

What makes you want to jump out of bed and launch yourself into your day?

I’ve been trying for years to work out what my purpose is, what I am on this planet to do, be, create, make, change or whatever. I’ve read a shed load of self-help books about finding it, done online courses, meditated, asked all of gods and spirits etc, etc, etc..

Annoyingly, the answer has been there all along, staring me right in the face.

I’m here to be happy.

If in the course of being happy I somehow change the world, help people, or achieve something epic then WAHAY!! Amazing stuff, but that’s not my goal, my goal is just to be happy. This knowledge has now freed me up, I’m not focussed on finding the elusive unicorn, I now just do things that I enjoy doing, hang out with people I like, and most of all, I just be myself, which is pretty f’ing liberating.

I’ve finally stopped pretending to be whoever, just so that people like me. I am finally just being me, and it turns out that by doing this, I’ve found a tribe of other people just like me. Some of them may be a little worn at the edges, they’ve had their bumps and blips along the way, but they are fun, funny, friendly joyful people.

I’ve spent a lot of my 43 years not fulfilling this purpose, in fact, I’ve been the complete opposite; depressed, miserable, angry, hateful, jealous of others that have got their sh*t together and generally wasting my life.

Now that I’ve finally realised the truth though, I’m embracing life and I’m making the most of every moment.

So, if I can, you can too.
